    Feminism to me is being a woman and doing what you want. In which you break barriers and do what you want without the idea and thoughts of another. This idea of feminism is shown in Audre Lorde's film in which she was named by the governor of New York the Walt Whitman Citation of Merit for poetry and was named the state poet from 1991 to 1993. she rose above everything as a black, gay, immigrant, woman. She showed that she was more and rose above it to win awards and be recognized. She was willing to break barriers and ideas of people including society to do what she wanted and to believe in herself. A woman who reminds me of this is Nina Berberova in the italics are mine. She was a woman who found her voice and freedom although it was different from the gender norm of the time. She was seeking a life of profession that confused gender norms and her overall life until she found her given profession poetry. She went into a field where she found herself and did what she wanted despite her family and her fear of letting them down. She broke out and did what she wanted to be her true self.

    Feminism is breaking boundaries and doing things that appear to be primarily a man’s job as well as breaking norms that were mainly held by men.  The Price of my soul by Bernadette Devlin is an excellent example of this. In the fact that she wanted to wear masculine clothes but also argue and do politics which was not a social norm. She was a woman of progress wishing to break free and set a path for other women. In a way, I see feminism as a means to help others for the future as women do these things in order to advance and be their authentic selves leaving room for others to take examples. This reminds me of Beryl Markham From West with the Night when she said "I have had responsibilities and work, dangers, and pleasure, good friends and a world without walls to live in." She was living a life that was outside the norm doing things and having a career that sets her apart. She leaves room for women who want to do what she does and room to strive for what she has. In a way, I see feminism as wanting something for yourself and being able to be your full self no matter what people see you as. Simone de Beauvoir in the prime of life especially showed this. She was a woman who wanted to work, made budgets, and enjoyed her freedom. She was someone who wanted to be more than just someone who could get married and have babies. She lived free with her relationship with Satre.
