Nina Berberova was a woman who found her voice and her freedom although it was different from the gender norm of the time. She was seeking a life of profession that confused gender norms and overall her life until she found her given profession poetry. Berbervoa's ideal profession made her hide her talents from the world and even feel as though she needed to hide them from her family. Berberova's life felt as though she had to hide, which was something all women thought they had to do. Even In her day an era everyone was in a time in which they felt as though they had to hide things in order to survive. Berbervoa didn't want a normal "nest" or family norm/ way of life, she wanted her way of the profession without being forced into gender norms.
This era was difficult, especially with the looming threat of poverty. Berberorva wanted to have a profession and be successful. Although it made her confused at times and even had her doing normal male things. She had often felt uncomfortable in a sense with being a woman since she wanted more. This shame of wanting more forced her into hiding. Hiding who she truly was and who she truly wanted to be. Berbova didn't want to hurt anyone and empathized and knew how to love people and things, but was just nervous about revealing who she was. This is why this quote goes so well as she truly was just nervous and didn't mean for her to hide to hurt anyone she just didn't know if she could be herself freely.

I think the idea of her hiding is interesting considering the fact that it is very obvious that she doesn't want to hide, she just feels like she must hide in her current situation. Over time she realized that and the end seems like a hopeful turn for her. She will no longer hide and will be able to make her own decisions which has been her goal all along.
